12Years: My Messed-up Love Story

As soon as I heard the name Chetan Bhagat, I was transported to my college days, nostalgic of the day I really enjoyed reading his books like 5 Point someone, 3 mistakes of my life, two states etc. undoubtedly, I can say that the millennium readers have a special place in their heart for Chetan Bhagat. Ironically, I read his books around the age of 21, which coincidentally was the age of the female protagonist in "12 Years." Now, 12 years later, I'm reading his book again, and the male protagonist happens to be 33, the same age as I am now.

12 Years is a story an urban love story of couple who couldn’t be more different. He is 33, she is 21, he is a stand-up comedian while she is works in private equity, he is divorced while she never had a boyfriend, he loves his chicken while she is pure vegetarian; representing, the concept of opposites attract.

I started reading with the excitement to re-live the college days; awaiting a powerful message at the end however I was unable to find any. I found the unnecessary fixation and reminder of Saket’s body builder figure a bit off-putting. The first half is overly focused on their sex life, rather than digging deeper into their emotional connection and relationship dynamics, while the second half is filled with showing the fabulous lives of rich people. I understand the need for including the drama and spice to make a story appealing to audience of all the categories; however; I expected a more mature content from the author. Towards the end it felt more like plot straight out of a Karan Johar Movie; Looking at the past record, it sure has good Potential for Bollywood adaptation, containing of all the elements: love, sex, drama, Opposites attract, family drama, lavish life style, splurging all the money. I also felt like the characters should have had some character development, 12years for timelapse and still couldn’t find any growth in them.

I did like a part where the male protagonist Saket has a “tick theory” which resonated with me and I am sure more of the readers will as well. The book has quite a few relatable elements like; the restriction or safety measure imposed on girls in an everyday life; how girls are expected to follow a good girl/bad girl rule book. What I love the most about reading Chetan Bhagat books is that they are very easy to read and the language is super easy to understand, very few occasion to pick up the dictionary, and they are hilarious! The book can be read in a single sitting, It’s perfect for a warm cozy & fun evening.

Conclusion: I Feel the book might appeal more to someone who likes Love Stories, who are looking for light and quick read.

About the Author: Chetan Bhagat needs not introduction, but still some brief author information, He is a renowned Indian author. His novels often explore themes of love, relationships and career struggles. He popular work includes; “Five point someone (Available Here) adopted in Bollywood as “3 idiots”, “2 States adopted in movies also named 2 states (Available Here), “3 Mistakes of My life adopted in movie as “Kai po che” (Available here), “Half Girlfriend (Available here), “One night at call center (Available here)

I would rate the book: 3 out of 5 points
